This presentation focuses on an academic program which includes English courses and a focused-workshop series.  All students are enrolled in a Latin@ success leadership program at a public, urban institution.

In the first term, students are introduced to eportfolios as an academic tool in their Freshman English class.  In the second term, students continue to develop their academic portfolios with their English faculty while attending weekly workshops to explore what skills and qualities ideal candidates possess who obtain professional opportunities. Peer mentors assist students to ensure students engage in activities to build and document evidence of their skills.

With scaffolded support, students apply for opportunities and reflect in their portfolios the process, their goals, and their advancement towards their goals.  They then engage in their first college internship or redress gaps in their academic performance or experiences so they could obtain special opportunities in their second year.

In this presentation, Daniel Auld, a college administrator and Carmen Kynard, an English faculty member, will engage attendees in a conversation about the design, challenges and accomplishments of this co-curricular project that centers ePortfolios for Latin@ student success in the first year.
