Stand Out

Change if you want to change not because someone told you to. Have confidence in the way you carry yourself no matter what anyone says. Yes, you may hurt but if you can show others that you love the way you look then that might inspire others to do so. Your perspective of beauty is the perspective you should go by. The world should not be telling us how to wear our hair and deem what is beautiful, for the world does not even know. The world is confused on what beautiful means, because you have models defining beautiful while you personally see many different races and people all around. The true meaning of beautiful is the way you accept yourself.

Aunt Jackie's Curls and Coils is a hair product that is promoting that natural hair is beautiful. They decided to make a video using little girls. Apparently little girls are being told in school that their hair is unacceptable and that should be brought to attention. How can you tell someone especially a little girl who their natural hair “just isn't...good enough”? On the Facebook page there are true-life stories of women using the products by Aunt Jackie and embracing their natural hair. This is a product that can be trusted due to the reviews and a video created by them is credible since many women are sharing their stories. This video is clearly stating that the hair that these girls “were born with is not going anywhere” and that is true. These girls can grow up with their natural hair and enjoy it.

How can someone tell a young girl to change their natural hair? This video uses the innocence of little girls to draw our attention. The girls ask a couple of question and in the end they say that it is not a “fad” and that “it is presentable”. The girls ask if their hair is beautiful and if they should get a perm? These girls have a right to know that their hair is acceptable and beautiful. At the very end of the video the girls say, “If I embrace my natural, then you should too.” By having this video, Aunt Jackie can bring awareness to those who are buying their products and the impact that girls are having on acceptance. These girls are soldiers in embracing their hair and anyone can have the courage to do so.

Why must society give young growing girls a different meaning of beautiful and not just one, which is to accept themselves? Now days instead of just weight problems, it is hair. If these little girls on the video can say that they can embrace their natural hair, then we should be able to do the same. We need to help those other young girls who may not have a chance to know that their hair is beautiful. If everyone went around wearing their hair the way they like it and not the way they were told to wear it then we could change the world's definition of beautiful. A true-life event occurred right here in the United States and Melissa Perry-Harris shares the event on her MSNBC show.
