I could not believe how amazing it was to hear from Aida Rodriguez, US Customs and Border Protection Officer. She’s amazing in the fact that she taught, trained and works for homeland security. I would have never imagined that the government still does background checks on her. The reason why is because she said that she has a clean record and she have been working there for so many years. You would think that the government would trust someone who has many years of experience in their field.

I was very appalled by her story of that rich white woman. The world really needs to stop thinking about status, race and where they come from. It should not matter if they are from Long Island or the Bronx, everyone should be treated equal but it does not happen. If I was in that situation I probably would have done the same thing as she did, thanks to my patience. I thought it was nice to see the relationship you and her have. Just like Brian said on class, you are like her Tia. It made me think about which teacher I should have a good relationship with.

Now I know why there are airport security officers at the gate when you get off the plane. I really thought it was cool how they can spot someone who is trying to smuggle drugs in. I know for a fact, that job is not for me. I am not good at reading people or thinking as quickly as she does. It is also very interesting the drug information that they have to know about each international country that does what, and the storing materials. I can relate to in terms of friends. Sure I talk to people but really I am just shy. It is getting better but I know that making friends is vital to the workplace since most jobs involve partners or working with others. Luckily I can work well with others, it is just a matter of making friends. Her work history and extra-curricular activities is impressive, especially since she is Latina. I would like to go to Washington and experience what she did it but it does not really go with the job I want to do. If I could read people just by their attire, it might change everything. By everything I mean the way one see a person. I can not wait to get the high respect she gets at work. Imagine that, being able to say “send someone else” at work. Working in different fields brings more experience and respect and that is what she did. I did not think that first impression was very important until the story she gave really opened my eyes to that it is important.

Having these guest speakers is really informative. I would have never known about the co-op information, this could really help out with any internships that may be beneficial to me. I hope to do an internship that does pay just so that I can be able to save money for trips or anything else. I learned that government jobs can be exciting as well as annoying especially with the continuous background checks.
