Long-Term Academic/Professional Goal:

My long term academic/professional goal is to graduate from John Jay College's Forensic Psychology BA/MA Program with a focus in Victimology by June 2020.

Short-Term Goals for Spring 2017:

(that will help me achieve my long-term goal!)

(1) By March 10th, I would like to have completed most of the general application, which includes academic and professional information, and the submission of professor recommendations.

(2) By March 15th, I would like to have completed my application for the Psi Chi Honor Society, which is an international honor society for psychology majors and minors. (Acceptance into this honor society will allow me to network with many people in my chosen field, enabling me to develop mentorships with some – which will be beneficial when I begin my Master’s Thesis).

(3) By the end of March, I would like to have attended a personal statement writing workshop.

(4) By April 5th, I would like to have the first draft of my personal statement completed and peer-reviewed, enabling me to work on it over Spring Break.

(5) By April 20th, I would like to have submitted my research proposal draft to my Research Methods professor. (The finished proposal will be submitted to the BA/MA Program as my writing sample).

(6) By the end of April, I would like to have been accepted into the Psi Chi Honor Society.

(7) By the first week in May, I would like to have completed my second draft of my personal statement.

(8) Also during the first week in May, I would like to begin editing my research proposal.

(9) By the second week in May, I would like to have my personal statement reviewed by Professor Amanda Harris, who reviews personal statement for students applying to law schools.

I’d also like my research proposal to once again be reviewed by my professor by the second week in May.

(10) By the end of May, I would like to have completed and submitted my BA/MA application for the Fall 2017 semester.

Action Plan for Reaching Short-Term Goals:

In order to achieve the short-term goals listed above, I must put an action plan in motion. Reaching these due dates that I’ve set for myself will definitely become more challenging as the semester progresses, since other assignments will take precedence. That is why I’m going to ensure that I’m not the only person keeping myself accountable. As stated in Part I, "confiding aspirations in other people gives them a chance to check in with you to make sure you’re still on the right path to achievement and success." My advisors will all be informed of my goals throughout this semester. Knowing that all of them will check in will encourage me to stay on top of my work and complete all the steps I laid out for myself by the respective deadlines arranged.

Recognizing that accountability may not always encourage me to proceed how I’d like, especially when addressing the goals focused on lengthy writing tasks (personal statement and research proposal), I plan on exercising the Pomodoro Method. This technique uses a timer to break down work into intervals, more specifically the timer is set to run for 25 minutes; this length of time should be dedicated to doing the work that needs to be completed. After that time is up, a short break is given. Often, I begin a task, and then become so immersed in it that I continue even after the time I allotted myself to do the work expires. So, hopefully this method encouragers me to continue that trend but on an earlier note (instead of after procrastination sets in for a bit).
