Miller K., Danner F., Staten R.,(2008). Relationship of Working Hours with Selected

Health Behaviors and Academic Progress Among a College Student Cohort. Journal

Of American College Health, Vol. 56., 675, 679.

In this Journal Article, Doctors K. Miller, F. Danner, and R. Staten, create a survey asking questions about the student’s self-reported health behavior and the amount of hours the student works per week. Doctor’s Miller, Danner, and Staten randomly give this survey to 1,700 undergraduate students from the University of Kentucky and out of the 1,700 undergraduate students that were given this survey; only 903 undergraduate students have completed the survey, and based on the results from the surveys, students who engage in binge drinking, suffer from lack of sleep, and have low academic performance work 20 hours or more per week.

This article was very useful to me because this article gave me information about undergraduate students who work and go to school and shows how over a certain amount of work, the student would suffer from lack of sleep, have low academic performance, and might possibly engage in binge drinking. The purpose of this article is to show how after a certain amount of hours a student works; the student might not be successful in college, and to show other undergraduate students or any college students so these college students can balance their health, academic life, and financial needs so these students can academically succeed.

In this online magazine article, Jess P. Shatkin did research on the stress levels of college students and found out that there has been a recent increase in the stress levels of college students. Shatkin found out that certain problems that may cause an increase of stress levels in college student might come from the student’s financial needs, and more importantly the difficulties that the student might have when adjusting to college life. In addition to Shatkin finding a significant change in young adults when they are adjusting to college; Shatkin also found an significant change in the parents of the young adult when the young adult is adjusting to college. Certain problems that the parents of the young adults might have is that the typical parent might feel like there is a void in their household and might feel like they are giving up some of their parental control since their son or daughter is no longer a child. Later on in the article, Shatkin gives advice to the college students adjusting to college and also give advice to the parent of the young adult so the young adult’s transition to college can be easier not only for the young adult but also the young adult’s parent.

This article was very useful to me because this article gave me exactly what I need to answer my research question. Certain things that Shatkin pointed out in the article that was very useful for me was when he said that young adults should always know where to ask help for when it comes to academic problems and to take time learning new material so the young adult would not feel so overwhelmed.

This article gives the reader a sense of what the typical young adult should do and prepare for when starting in college. This article was useful although I would have preferred an article that caters to the young adult where the author gives direct advice to the college student instead of the young adult who just recently got out of high school so that student would have a more successful transition into college.

This article was published in 1972 by Donald Wayne Bonner. This article similar to all of the other gave ways on how to make a young adult adjust to college more easier but at that time colleges started to create freshman orientation where freshman’s were able to access information with other people who attended college and adjusted to college life. This article was very useful to me because this article gives me exact information on how a young adult can make a successful transition into college.
