IN THE CLASSROOM

I. Writing Prompt

The prompt today is a kind of check-in/check-up.  Registration for spring semester is right around the corner.  Now is the time to really reflect back and think forward at the same time.  On a piece of paper or in an email to Carmen (send to professorkynard@gmail.com), address the following:

  • What are your goals for the rest of the semester in this class?  How do you plan to reach these goals?
  • ePortfolios are ready to go public now.  Are you ready to take yours public?  Why or why not?  What will you do/add to make it public-ready?  When do you plan to launch?
  • What are your goals for the rest of the semester in general?  How do you plan to reach these goals?
  • What concerns do you have right now about the course or anything in general?
  • What concerns do you want Dan Auld to be aware of?

PLEASE NOTE: I will collect these to get a sense of where you are but will not return/respond except in cases of emergency.  Generally, for writing prompts that are emailed to me, I read them but do not respond unless, again, it is an emergency.

II. Housekeeping Issues

  • There is no class next week on 11/14 (Carmen is at NWSA in PR).  During classtime, work on your DAB (all 16 entries) and your proposal.  Both are due at midnight on the ePortfolio.
  • I will collect your work today and use a highlighter on every part that you need to redo/revise (incorrect APA, sentence opener, etc).  Can I leave these for you somewhere in the honors lounge on Tuesday?
  • We will not see each other again until 11/21.  There will be some adjustments to the syllabus for that day.  I will email you the changes and keep reminding you.  For now, just know that the ePort deadline will be moved to midnight that night and you do NOT need to do the reading before class.  Just bring the reading with you to do IN CLASS.  Do NOT worry if this does not make sense right now.  It will later.

III. Revising/Correcting Your DAB entries

The Correct Way to Cite an Article

Horn, C. (2005). Standardized assessment and the flow of students into the college admission pool.  Educational Policy, 19(2), 331-348.

The Correct Way to Name Authors and Article Titles

(titles & authors must be named at least ONCE in EACH citation and must come EARLY in the citation)

In “Standardized assessment and the flow of students into the college admission pool,” Horn explains the historical changes in college entrance exams.

INCORECT WAYS TO NAME AUTHORS AND ARTICLE TITLES!!!!!  DO THIS AND DIE!!

(Not really but I needed to get your attention!)

1) In “Standardized assessment and the flow of students into the college admission pool” by Horn, he explains the historical changes in college entrance exams.

2) In “Standardized assessment and the flow of students into the college admission pool” by Horn, the article explains the historical changes in college entrance exams.

3) In “Standardized assessment and the flow of students into the college admission pool” by Horn, it explains the historical changes in college entrance exams.

4) In “Standardized assessment and the flow of students into the college admission pool” explains the historical changes in college entrance exams.

5) I read “Standardized assessment and the flow of students into the college admission pool.”  The article explains the historical changes in college entrance exams.

IN THE LAB

VI. More Prep Work on the DAB

  1. Make sure that your Reflections and Contact Page come last still.
  2. Give your DAB a title now (it can be changed still, yes).  HIDE THIS PAGE as soon as you go public.  Remove the "hide" function when the full DAB is done.
  3. Upload your annotations to DAB Library page if you haven't already. Remember to make the revisions/corrections to your DAB that were discussed in class.
  4. Make a new top tab for the research project.   HIDE THIS PAGE as soon as you go public. Make a left tab for the research proposal.  Just call it "research proposal."  This is where you will paste in your research proposal.  Make sure it has centered, boldface subsections. See Arooj's example here.
  5. Make a left tab for the literature review.  Just call it "literature review."  Start working on your literature review. You will get more directions next week via email.

VII. If, There is Time Remaining....

PART A:

Upload your lists of websites, videos, articles ect. Be prepared to annotate all of this next week.

Part B:

Add a new page in your Reflections Tab (whatever you called it).  Give it a catchy title. Then start a new RICH TEXT module. If you prefer to hand-write this, then do so and type/transfer this later. On that webpage, write your response to this:

  • What have you decided FINALLY about your topic right now, as of today, and why?
  • This project that you are doing will be unlike anything else anyone has done since the data (not necessarily the method) is YOURS ONLY.  Who do you want it impact?  Why is it important?  What/who do you want to give a voice to or shine a light on?
