Kantemó

Kantemó is Maya for the snake cave. On this excursion, we traveled in the afternoon to arrive in time to see nature take its course–watching a snake eat a bat. Upon arriving at the main point, some used bicycles and others walked the one kilometer to the cave. Upon entering the cave we were instructed by the guides to put on our helmets with headlamps, plastic gloves, and face masks to enter the cave. Walking down the steps into the cave the intensive heat and humidity, and the fear and was felt throughout my body. Inside the cave was dark, but outside the cave there was light and with every step, you heard and felt the flapping of bat wings and occasionally bats flying into you.

The group was split into two subgroups, the first group had a total of 8 students and two guides, and the other was five including myself and one tour guide. The group that I was in had to crawl through an extra cave and sit in complete darkness in hopes to see the snake-bat action. But after sitting and sweating in a small hot space, the guide realized there were no snakes and therefore had to return and go the way the other group went. It turned out the other group had not traveled far before encountering such action of a snake eating a bat. So my group was able to move closer to the snake and see how slowly he swallowed the bat–whole. It was such an amazing experience that it did not bother me that we had taken an extra path.

Being in this cave I learned that I can push myself to do things that I never thought I could do such as climb, crawl, and not panic.
