Otavalo

The second weekend in Ecuador we had an excursion to Otavalo, an Indigenous concentrated area. Here we had the opportunity to enjoy the market where they sold sweaters. scarfs, belts, bags, and other hand-made objects. It was so interesting because although two hours away from Quito, there was a drastic change in language and style of living. Professor Barrios was able to have two Indigenous women come talk to us about their customs, tradition, language, and even sung a song to us.

Afterwards, we drove to see a waterfall and visit a family owned factory. At the waterfall, we took pictures and admired the scenery of the freshness and the sound of the water. At the family factory, we were able to learn about the business of making the llama sweaters, scarfs, blankets, and bags as well as purchase some of these items. We saw the machinery they used and the many different colour yarns they have imported from Peru or Bolivia.
