ICE & Sources: Identifying Author Strategies

Background & Forefront: Your homework assignment was to locate two sources: one from a library database and another from a mainstream news outlet about a topic you are thinking about committing to for your research essay. Today we are going to further interrogate that source in order to strengthen your reading and analytical skills. Below are the steps you are going to take to do just that:

  • Pull up the sources on a device, get out your hard copy(ies), or your notes on the article.

  • How many databases did you search? How many news outlets? Did you use different search terms, or the same ones? What were your search terms or keywords? What different keywords have you learned about your topic since starting your research?

  • Google the author of one of your articles. What does their background suggest about their expertise in the field you are researching?

  • Describe one difference and one similarity in the way your sources introduced ideas.

  •  Which introduction style did you prefer? Why?

  • Describe one difference and one similarity in the types of evidence your sources cited.

  • What kind of evidence did you find more compelling? Why?

  • Describe one difference and one similarity between the way your authors analyzed evidence in support of their argument.

  • Which mode of analysis did you find most persuasive? Why?

  • Identify the main arguments of both of your articles.

  • List your questions for both authors of your articles.
