This webpage includes a poem and images that helps us define and understand hegemonic masculinity and the way it effects all people.
What Is Hegemonic Masculinity, You Ask?

What is Hegemonic Masculinity, you ask?

Hegemonic Masculinity is being forced into a box.

Hegemonic Masculinity is being privileged

It is telling a male to “act like a man”.

It is being called a wimp, a girl, a bitch.

It is being trained not to feel emotions that you were born to feel.

It is being told to, “be tough, don’t cry, show them you’re tough”.

Being in control.

Controlling others.

Hide your feelings.

Feelings are for girls.

Feelings make you weak.

Be aggressive.

Are you scared? Hide it.

Isolate yourself.

Are you mad? Hit someone.

Beat them up.

Show them you are tough

Show them you are a man.

If you do not play sports, you are probably gay.

Show them you are not gay.

Gay is being less than.

Gay is almost as bad as being a woman.

Be a boss, be the boss.

What is Hegemonic Masculinity, you ask?

Hegemonic Masculinity is being forced into a box.

Hegemonic Masculinity is being privileged.

It is being allowed to let out all your energy as a child.

Playing rough is okay.

I do not have to worry about walking alone at night.

Being more likely to be the harasser than the victim.

I do not have to worry about being harassed because of my outfit choice.

Having my behavior excused because, “boys will be boys”.

It is being more likely to get a job

A higher paying job.

Having sex with many partners makes me the man.

My clothes are more affordable, yet last longer.

I get paid more for doing less.

I can keep my own last name

I deserve it.

Never having to sacrifice my career for a significant other or children.

I am a great dad even though I do not raise my own children.

Making money is enough to make me look good.

When I make a mistake, it will not be because of my gender.

Having a beer belly is not as bad as a woman having unshaved legs.

Not having to think twice about certain thing.

Not having to worry if I should bring pepper spray with me tonight, just in case.

Not having to acknowledge t

hat as a white heterosexual man, I am incredibly privileged.

What is Hegemonic Masculinity, you ask?

Hegemonic Masculinity is understanding that being privileged does not mean you never have to go through tough times.

It is understanding that hiding your pain does not mean you do not feel any.

Hegemonic Masculinity is a problem.

Hegemonic Masculinity is unhealthy for you and me.
